Janie was an actress – but was she a good enough one to carry out the masquerade that the mysterious Pagan Pentrevah was demanding of her? For he wanted her to pretend to be married to him – because, he said, he wanted to keep his ex-wife Roxanne at bay. Janie agreed, although with reservations – reservations that were increased when the lovely Roxanne arrived, for how could any man want to keep her at arm’s length? Could Janie compete? More to the point, was she actress enough to conceal her own growing and hopeless love for Pagan?
