Rescued from a life of hardship and poverty by a benevolent uncle, young Lucy Garwood lives in the shadow of her wealthy relatives, even as she longs to be loved and respected in her own right. Despite her considerable charms, an orphan like Lucy can't hope to make much of an impression on the bluebloods of the tom. Her station in life seems unlikely to change--until a case of mistaken identity and a passionate kiss from a dashing stranger set Lucy's quiet little world on its ear... Robert Renquist, Duke of Linborough, is determined to win the lovely lady Maude--though more for the sake of pride than love. But when he sweeps her into a surprise embrace, he is chagrined to discover he hasn't kissed Maude, but her lookalike half-niece, Lucy! Even more unexpected is the unmistakable attraction he now feels for a young woman who is beneath him in lineage, but more than a match in wit and character. Still, class-conscious Robert is ready to put Lucy aside--until he discovers he cannot. For the winsome girl has charmed her way into his heart, reminding him that nothing is nobler than the pursuit of true love...
