When they were young Oriel Mellstock and Devil Haggard had been wildly in love – but everything had gone wrong, and they had parted in bitterness and misunderstanding when Devil married Oriel’s cousin Clare. So Oriel had married someone else and put Devil out of her mind for ever – or so she thought. For now she was a rich widow, and had found her way back to the Yorkshire dale where Devil was still living – and she knew she loved him as much as ever. But how could she put the clock back, when he was still married to Clare – who needed him more than ever?
