The present work broaches a classic subject in the Mesoamerican studies: the conception of the indigenous cosmos. In this book we study the interpretation and reconstruction of the vision of the Mesoamerican world between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries and propose that the cosmological spaces are dynamic elements defined on the basis of their interrelation and of the ritual action generated by human and non-human agents throughout history. Among the main contributions made by this work, we can mention the re-evaluation of the pre-Hispanic sources, the critical review of the model of vertical overlapped levels with thirteen celestial levels and nine under-worldly ones, and the proposal of new cosmographic alternatives to understand the composition of the Mesoamerican worlds. We are not proposing another universalist model of the Mesoamerican cosmology, but the possibility of a variety of repertories that work simultaneously as the result of the historical moment, the regional variations, the regenerative processes of the visual memory, and of the specificity of use in particular contexts. The readers will not find definite answers to the problem concerning the Mesoamerican cosmological configuration but a variety of arguments and examples that will enable them to question the necessity of looking for an stable cosmology equivalent to the Christian one in order to direct it towards the supposed Mesoamerican cultural unity.
