"Recreates, in 14 'short stories,' the legendary Costa Rican national campaign against the much-fictionalized and hated American mercenary William Walker. Altamirano's enhancement of peasant heroism is a result of both patriotism and literary treatment. The protagonists are the 'people,' and an integral part of the book is the sense of Central American unity against the invader"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
