The story begins with rumors of ancient heroes rising from the dead and horrific armies of monsters ravaging the countryside. When an ambassador from the Tamul Empire arrives begging for aid, Sparhawk—now Prince Consort to Queen Ehlana—is called upon to help. Believing these disturbances have a paranormal origin, Sparhawk, Ehlana, and their daughter Princess Danae embark on a grueling overland trek across the Daresian continent. Their goal is Matherion, the "fire-domed" capital of the Tamul Empire, where they hope to uncover the source of the chaos.
