As heiress to her deceased father's estate, Betty Stanhope was the victim of a secret plot to wrest away her fortune through a forced marriage to one of her stepmother's wicked sons. Betty dreaded the thought of marrying either one, but when she realized that she was being tricked into marrying the worst one, she fled the church during the ceremony. She was taken in by a stranger, Jane Carson, who quickly became her friend. But the cruel, money-hungry bridegroom was determined to hunt her down. He would stop at nothing to capture her, unless he could be stopped in time by someone who knew the truth.
