"Important contribution to social history and popular culture, this work examines festivals, games, and other forms of public entertainment within context of Spanish American colonial society. Employs a conceptual framework placing the Crown and its administrators at the top of the hierarchy that sponsored these events, but also gives considerable attention to the spectators/participants who came from middle and lower sectors of society. Quite extensive coverage ranges from solemn religious festivals to carnival to theatrical productions to sporting events. Based on impressive combination of archival sources and published scholarly works"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
