Cassandra Markham is in desperate straits. Her beloved but destitute father died shortly after moving Cassie and her three young siblings to London's seamy East End--and now their hard scrabble life is about to get even harder. They have neither food nor shelter, but the resourceful Cassie does have a plan... Bundling her brother and sisters into a carriage, she sets off for Mayfair--and the lavish estate owned by the Earl of Worthing, her father's distant cousin. Surely the earl, with all his connections, will be able to find a man willing to marry Cassie and take on her young siblings as well. But it is Simon, the earl's son, whom Cassie must apply to for help. Aware that he was indirectly responsible for the Markham's downfall, he agrees to play matchmaker...until he begins to fall for the lovely Cassie himself.
