Overview of classical music in Latin America from 19th century to present. Identifies central ideas about musical phenomena of various countries and enunciates prominent notions of musical identity, composition and their creators. First part deals with 19th century music, which authors consider virtually ignored by modern scholars. Second discusses aspects of nationalism, avant-garde, and post-modernism. Also offers country-by-country index of contemporary Latin American composers born after 1960, and basic discography of Latin America music in 20th and 21st century.
