Illustrated guide to darker aspects of Mayan mythology. At once erudite and evocative, informative and horrifying, book presents collection of Mayan tales, legends and beliefs about monstrous supernatural beings: a bleeding, disembodied leg that walks the earth listening and watching; a malevolent goat with burning eyes; serpents, giants and head-hunting bats; and many others. Graphic illustrations in moody sepia watercolor add further atmosphere. Peniche Barrera is important Yucatan writer and authority on Mayan literature and mythology. Chan Alvarado is prominent illustrator and painter.
