"This series of exhibitions are part of the ambitious research project that EAFIT University has been developing during the last few years and which aims to rescue the figure of the pioneers of our photography. Other figures preceded this research project: Jorge Obando, Pastor Restrepo and the Duperly family" (HKB Translation) --Page 11. The book recovers from oblivion the extraordinary figure of Horacio Marino Rodríguez Márquez, the eldest son of Don Melitón Rodríguez Roldán, owner of the local marble workshop. Along with carving tombstones and preparing burials, the workshop became a cultural and free thought center of the city of Medellin. In 1885 a young relative named Francisco Antonio Cano arrived from Yarumal,. In him Horacio Marino found a soul mate. Cano's innate abilities allowed him to collaborate in the workshop that offered promotional offers: whoever hired a funeral, the client was given the portrait of the deceased elaborated by Cano. Also in the workshop, umbrellas were repaired and glass was engraved. Rodríguez Márquez and Cano learned drawing and painting with Ignacio Luna and photography with his uncle Ricardo Rodríguez Roldan. Horacio Marino Rodríguez Márquez's curiosity and eagerness to learn had no limits and he left a fertile legacy that includes painting, photography, engraving and architecture, as well as his role as writer, editor and teacher and generations of engineers, technicians and architects.
