"Well-researched, sophisticated examination of 1760s unrest provides valuable portraits of cross-sections of colonial society during the time of change and stress associated with the Bourbon reforms. Concentrates on the condition and actions of the indigenous peoples, law enforcement, the problem of justice, and growing impact of cultural and commercial influences from outside the Spanish empire. Numerous footnotes indicate author's use of archival research and relevant published works"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
