As she set off from her home in South Africa to a new life in Australia, Elinor was full of mixed hopes and fears — hopes of an exciting new life, fears that she might not be able to cope with it. Always a natural worrier, Elinor would have worried more had she been able to foresee all the things that would happen to her before the long voyage was over. For also on board was Kit Anderson, an attractive Australian with whom she lost no time in falling in love. And what a waste of time that was, she thought mournfully, when Kit made it plain that he despised her and her timid ways, but it was also obvious that Alison Poole, beautiful, arrogant and self-assured, was the only girl for him.
