"Important contribution to the history of fortifications in Latin America during the Spanish colonial period. Examines in detail the impact of the designs and theoretical writings of the famous French military engineer Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) on the formation of the Real Colegio de Ingenieros Militares in Spain and the practice of military engineering throughout Latin America during the 17th-18th centuries. Also considers the work of Spanish military engineers Sebastián Fernández de Medrano (1646-1705) and Ignacio de Sala (d. 1755), who played a decisive role in disseminating Vauban's ideas.
