Lucas Corso is searching for the original of The Book of the Nine Doors to the Kingdom of Darkness, which supposedly contains the secret to summoning the Devil. It is said that only one copy survived the Inquisition. How is it then that Corso has tracked down three authenticated copies? Who is the beautiful woman, named after an Arthur Conan Doyle character, following him - is she a threat, a protector, or a love interest? What ensues is a search that takes Corso from Madrid to Paris and brings him into a world of a secret society of antiquarians, the occult, nineteenth-century popular literature, fictional and historical characters - all brought to a startling and unforgettable conclusion.
