"The Evening and the Morning and the Night" is a 1987 science fiction novelette by Octavia E. Butler about Duryea-Gode Disease (DGD), a genetic condition causing dissociation and self-mutilation, which stems from a cancer cure. The story follows two young, controlled DGD sufferers, Lynn and Alan, as they navigate societal prejudice, institutionalization, and their own mortality, exploring themes of identity, free will, and community in a world that marginalizes them.
