‘The gentleman you met on the sea. He will come for you.' To Serena Wentworth, this prophecy can only mean the dashing Gavin Fawcett, who kissed her on the deck of the SS Aroya, outward bound for Ceylon. Or could it possibly be the dauntingly stern Mr. Charles Monteith, aide-de-camp to the Governor, and the man into whose care she had been entrusted by her dying father? But Charles is practically married to someone else and thoroughly disapproves of his alarmingly young and innocent ward. In the tropical Indian Ocean paradise, the inexperienced Serena is lured into a compromising situation, when only marriage can save the reputation of the missionary's daughter. Who can she turn to for help and will the Indian's prophecy come true?
