The articles that make up this work share the purpose of analyzing the external dimension of different processes whose purpose has been to promote the modernization of the political, economic and social structures of Latin American countries. The approach adopted in the book is part of an analytical tradition typical of the region, which has understood that efforts to understand the problem of underdevelopment must be linked to the analysis of the international system. With this perspective, the articles analyze, through historical empirical approaches, a variety of experiences in fields ranging from foreign policy and education to trade, through law and the food question. A prominent area occupies the analysis of experiences that have taken place in Mercosur, a process of regional integration that, especially in its beginnings, was presented as a joint project of modernization for the South American region.
